What religious holiday is today
On May 28, the church calendar commemorates St. Nikita the Confessor, Bishop of Chalcedon; the martyr St. Eutychius, Bishop of Melitene.
St. Nikita the Confessor, Bishop of Chalcedon, lived in the second half of the 8th century. For his pious life, he was elevated to the rank of Bishop of Chalcedon. From 726 to 775, St. Nikita was the Archbishop of Chalcedon and courageously condemned the heresy of iconoclasm.
St. Nikita was known for his mercy, always helping the needy, welcoming travelers into his home, caring for orphans and widows, and defending those who were wronged. Later, for defending the veneration of icons, he was removed from his see, stripped of his rank, and exiled to one of the Palestinian monasteries, where he worked until the end of his days.
