Combat Medicine by NATO Standards: Ukraine Upgrades Wounded Assistance System.


The Ministry of Assistance reported that medical aid on the battlefield will be provided considering the experience of Ukrainian military medics and the developments of NATO partners.
"The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine approved new volumes of medical assistance at the pre-hospital stage during combat operations. Order No. 598 dated 03.09.2024 defines the model of role-based medical support according to NATO standards," the agency noted.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the document covers all stages: measures for the prevention, treatment, and evacuation of wounded and sick servicemen, police officers, and civil protection service members of all Security Forces and Defense Forces.
In general, it defines four roles of medical support:
role 1 (R1) — primary medical care, emergency assistance, basic diagnostics,
role 2 (R2) — extended care (resuscitation, surgical interventions at the pre-hospital stage),
role 3 (R3) — specialized assistance in hospitals,
role 4 (R4) — comprehensive assistance (specialized services and rehabilitation in rear hospitals).
According to the order, additional medical assistance on the battlefield may also be provided by support teams. These teams may include medical professionals from various units and civilian healthcare institutions.
