Hedgehogs are on the brink of extinction – The Guardian.
Over the past decade, the number of hedgehogs has significantly decreased, and they have been added to the list of near-vulnerable species in the Red Book. The main reason for the population decline is cars and neglected gardens, as well as the use of pesticides that destroy insects, which are food for hedgehogs. According to the Red Book, there is little information about the populations and range of hedgehogs. Conservationists urge people to create conditions for wildlife conservation, such as creating holes in fences for hedgehog movement and refraining from using pesticides. A large number of mammal species in the UK are under threat of extinction. For example, the numbers of curlews and black-tailed godwits have significantly decreased, which is bad news for ecologists. The Red Book also showed that 38% of the world's tree species are threatened with extinction due to deforestation, construction, and other factors.
In Ukraine, the Red Book is also being updated, adding more species of plants and animals to it.
