In Iran, 901 people were executed in 2024, including 31 women. Most of the condemned were executed for drug-related offenses. However, among the victims were also dissidents and individuals associated with the protests that occurred in 2022.
'It is deeply concerning that we are seeing a resurgence in the number of people sentenced to death in Iran,' said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk.
In 2023, 853 individuals were executed, the highest figure since 2015 when 972 people were executed, according to the UN Human Rights Office.
UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Liz Trussell noted that at least 31 women were executed last year, marking the highest number in the last 15 years.
'Most cases are related to murder charges. A large number of women have become victims of domestic violence, child marriages, or forced marriages,' she pointed out.
According to Trussell, one of the women executed for murder killed her husband to protect her daughter from being raped.
