Zelensky Calls for Protection of Ukraine's Nuclear Safety and Infrastructure
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the UN General Assembly and expressed his concern about the threat to nuclear safety posed by Russia and the destruction of energy infrastructure in Ukraine.
In March 2024, I received a report on Russian aggression against Ukraine. Russian missiles flew near Europe's largest nuclear reactor - Zaporizhzhia NPP. It was very frightening because no one knew if Russia would strike our nuclear facilities.
The Zaporizhzhia NPP remains under Russian occupation, posing a constant threat of a nuclear catastrophe:
There is a risk of a nuclear incident that could cause radiation not only in Europe, but also globally.
Zelensky received information about new threats from Russia:
Putin plans to attack our nuclear reactors and infrastructure to disconnect them from power supply lines and disrupt the supply systems of other countries.
The President noted that Russian aggression is destroying the country's energy infrastructure:
All our heat generation and distribution infrastructure has been destroyed. This could leave millions of Ukrainians without heating in winter. Putin is trying to deprive ordinary people of heat to inflict suffering on them.
Zelensky called on the international community to support his 'peace formula':
We must restore nuclear safety and stop the use of energy facilities as weapons. Ukraine must receive guarantees of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Russian occupying forces must leave our territory.
In concluding his speech, Zelensky called on all nations to unite for peace:
We want a real and fair peace for our people. I ask for your support so that we remain united as a nation and jointly fight for peace.
