According to a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russia plans to begin systematic use of motorcycles in military operations in Ukraine in the summer and autumn of 2025. This is likely intended to counter Ukrainian drones.

The report notes that the Russian Ministry of Defense has released a video showing units of the 299th Airborne Regiment training on motorcycles in groups of two or three. This indicates that the Russian military intends to use motorcycles in offensive operations and may bolster their personnel in Ukraine.

Russian soldiers use motorcycles to increase speed and maneuverability. This gives them an advantage in avoiding strikes from Ukrainian drones. However, the loud noise of the motorcycle hinders drivers from hearing the approach of Ukrainian drones.

ISW analysts observe that Russian units are increasingly using motorcycles and civilian vehicles for transporting troops and conducting attacks along the entire front line. This is a result of the Russian command's adaptation to the actions of Ukrainian drones and equipment limitations that arose from the losses of armored vehicles in the summer and early autumn of 2024.

It is known that Russia is preparing for a new offensive against Ukraine in the coming weeks. This aims to increase pressure on Ukraine and strengthen its negotiating position in ceasefire discussions.
