Turkey is sharply moving towards outright autocracy - Media.

Turkey became a full autocracy when Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was arrested as part of the repression against the opposition. İmamoğlu called for mass demonstrations to save democracy in the country. Many people took to the streets despite the prohibitions. Erdoğan is taking drastic measures against the opposition after his party's defeat in the municipal elections. İmamoğlu hopes to run as a CHP candidate in the 2028 presidential elections.
İmamoğlu's Arrest
On Wednesday, İmamoğlu was detained and suspected of corruption. On Sunday, the court officially arrested him. İmamoğlu denies the charges. More than 100 people, including politicians, businessmen, and journalists, were also detained.
Opposition Response
İmamoğlu urged all citizens of Turkey to fight for democracy and justice. The head of CHP announced an extraordinary congress to prevent Erdoğan's government from designating an influential figure in the party leadership. President Erdoğan called the demonstrations 'street terror' and urged to maintain public order.
Repression against the Opposition
Erdoğan's government detained hundreds of protesters and blocked opposition accounts on social media. Some communication tools, such as WhatsApp, were occasionally unavailable. State media avoids reporting on the protests. Investigations regarding İmamoğlu raised suspicions of his involvement with terrorist organizations.
The Future of Turkey
Experts believe that Turkey is transitioning to an authoritarian system. İmamoğlu is seen as the only candidate against Erdoğan in the presidential elections. Erdoğan's government has lost significant support in the municipal elections.
