Tourists in Finland leave down jackets in hotels
Tourists visiting Finland are increasingly leaving their expensive down jackets in hotels. This situation arises because the clothing does not fit into their suitcases. According to Yle, many visitors to northern resorts arrive from warm countries where such clothing is unnecessary.
“During the winter, we gather several bags of jackets in hotels that remain unwanted,” says Miko Gren, head of the Arctic Hotel Collection.
At the Sokos Hotel Vaakuna in Helsinki, even announcements in the elevators urge guests to bring items that did not fit in their luggage. Afterward, these items will be donated to charity or sent for recycling, reports hotel director Tiina Mayatty.
The municipality of Rovaniemi and the service organization Business Rovaniemi plan to conduct a study by the end of January to determine how many unnecessary items tourists leave in the city.
“Tourists leave an incredible amount of items, and Finland still does not understand the scale of this phenomenon,” says the project leader.
She suggests tourists rent clothing during their travels and also regularly recycle the items left behind.
