According to the reports from the External Intelligence Service, the number of cases of seizure of the dangerous synthetic drug carfentanil has increased in Russia.
This drug is five thousand times stronger than heroin, and its lethal dose for a human is only 0.002 mg compared to 70 mg in heroin.
'Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid, a derivative of fentanyl. It was developed in 1974 for use as a veterinary sedative for large animals. This drug is officially permitted in China, from where it is supplied to Russia. The high concentration of the drug allows it to enter the Russian Federation in small batches, complicating its detection. The drug is mainly seized in the eastern regions of Russia - Siberia, the Far East, and the Urals. It is not produced in Russia because synthesis requires special conditions and protective measures due to its high toxicity. The drug is sold through closed channels in messengers,' representatives of external intelligence stated.
It was noted that during 2024-2025, Russia recorded 15 cases of carfentanil seizures with a total weight of no less than 1.1 kg. The largest batches of the drug were seized in Kemerovo, Kurgan, Novosibirsk, and Syzran.
'The increase in the amount of seized carfentanil and the frequency of new cases indicate a deterioration of the drug situation in Russia. The existence of stable channels of illegal drug trafficking in Russia and the spread of this substance among servicemen of the RF Armed Forces create conditions for the unhindered distribution of carfentanil in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine,' emphasized the External Intelligence Service.
